French beans - Kala Chana Sabzi
(Mildly spiced Indian sabzi made with French beans and black chickpeas)
The sabzi recipe I intend to share with you today is not very common. The combination of Farsbi/French beans and kala chana is not something that everybody has tried. However, I assure you that once you try this recipe, you will feel confident about it.
This is a mildly spiced sabzi - perfect for everyday meals. It can be served with roti/chapati and can also complement any dal-rice combo.

250g French beans (फ्रेंच बीन्स / फरसबी )
1/4 cup black chickpeas (काला चना / काळे चणे)
1/2 tbsp oil (तेल)
1 tsp mustard seeds (राई/ मोहरी)
3-4 garlic cloves ( लहसून/ लसूण)
1 medium onion (प्याज/ कांदा)
1 tsp turmeric powder (हल्दी पाउडर/ हळदी पाउडर)
1 tsp red chili powder or as per your taste (लाल मिर्च पाउडर)
2 tbsp coconut freshly grated (नारियल / खवलेला नारळ)
1 tsp sesame seeds (तिल/तीळ)
salt as per taste (नमक स्वादानुसार/ मीठ)
1/2 tsp sugar(चीनी/साखर)
1 tbsp lemon juice ( नींबू का रस / लिंबाचा रस)
For the garnish -
chopped coriander leaves (धनिया/ कोथिंबीर)
Method
Wash and soak the black chickpeas(काला चना) overnight or for 7-8 hours. They will swell up. Discard the extra water. Rewash the chickpeas. Add water, and salt to them. Pressure cook for 7-8 whistles. Strain them to remove any excess water. Set aside.
Cut the French beans, and onion (प्याज) as shown in the video above.
Crush the garlic cloves(लहसून) using a garlic press or mince them.
Dry roast the sesame seeds (तिल) on low flame till they start spluttering.
In a kadhai/pan, add little water (about 2 tbsp). When the water starts boiling, add the cut French beans and give it a stir. Cover with a lid and let the beans steam cook for a few minutes. Check whether they are cooked or not by inserting a knife. The beans should be just cooked. DO NOT OVERCOOK THEM.Set them aside.
Heat oil and add mustard seeds (राई) to it. Let them splutter. Add crushed garlic and saute for a minute.
Add onion, turmeric powder (हल्दी), and red chili powder (लाल मिर्च पाउडर). Saute on low-medium flame till the onion are cooked.
Add the cooked beans, black chickpeas, salt, sugar, grated coconut, roasted sesame seeds, and lemon juice. Mix well.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
